Jane Frech: Springfield Y is more than a gym

frechHappy Father’s Day.

It is so fitting that I would be writing about the Springfield YMCA today, the day we celebrate our fathers.

You may not know that Father’s Day was founded in 1910 at the Spokane, Washington YMCA by Sonora Smart Dodd. Sonora was raised, along with her five siblings, by her father, a single parent following her mother’s death in childbirth.

Sonora saw the great success of Mother’s Day, founded in 1909, so she told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday of honor. She originally suggested Father’s Day be celebrated on June 5, her father’s birthday. Surprisingly, however, it took over four decades for President Lyndon B. Johnson to sign a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day.
