John Kelker: United Way’s campaign for the common good
As the president of United Way of Central Illinois, I am asked every day what it means to “Live United.”
After witnessing countless acts of generosity throughout the years, I can answer this question with a single word: community.
As a community, we have much to be grateful for — a good quality of life, the amenities of a large city with a small town atmosphere, a low crime rate, great schools and a Midwestern sense of community.
However, our community is not immune to the challenges which exist in every city, county and state across our nation. Unfortunately, tonight an individual will go to bed without a roof over his head; a child will go to bed hungry; a victim of domestic violence will cry herself to sleep; and a mother will spend a sleepless night worrying that her child is falling further behind in school.
