Target donates nearly 1,000 backpacks and lunchboxes to our community

target-logoThis week, Springfield’s Target Store donated more than 475 backpacks and 475 lunchboxes to United Way of Central Illinois to help local agencies meet the ongoing demand for school supplies. The donation from Target had a retail value in excess of $15,000.

The backpacks and lunchboxes are being distributed to 9 local agencies who continue to experience high demand for school supplies. Even though it has been more than a month since the start of the school year, local agencies continue to see a high the demand for school supplies.

Contact Ministries, Family Service Center, Helping Hands of Springfield, MERCY Communities, Mini O’Beirne Crisis Nursery, Rutledge Youth Foundation, Sojourn Shelter, Springfield Urban League, and Youth Service Bureau, are among the agencies to receive backpacks and lunchboxes to be distributed to low-income families in our community.

We’re fortunate that even national companies such as Target encourage their management and employees to support their local communities. Gifts such as these demonstrate the important role United Way plays in bringing together our business, nonprofit and community leaders to meet local needs.
