State Journal-Register coverage of community efforts to assist UCP Land of Lincoln following the loss of a group home to fire.
The owner of a Springfield furniture store has stepped up to help United Cerebral Palsy of Land of Lincoln after a weekend fire destroyed one of its group homes.
Barney’s Furniture Inc., 2410 South Grand Ave. E., will be donating all of the furniture for a new rental home that will replace the one at Hastings Road and Sangamon Avenue that was destroyed Sunday.
The three men who lived in the house lost everything in the blaze. That prompted UCP to ask the community for help.
Brenda Yarnell, president and CEO of the agency, said Tuesday that the Barney’s donation is welcome news, but other items are still needed.
“We still have to buy pots, pans, dishes, detergent, food and clothing for the guys. We need all of the things that go inside a house,” Yarnell said. “The Barney’s donation is a huge load off our minds.”
The United Way of Central Illinois is working with UCP to mobilize in-kind gifts to replace basic necessities. Among the basic necessities needed are new men’s clothing, health and beauty essentials, bedding and other household items.
