Bill and Amy’s journey of family, support and recovery
Bill and Amy experienced first hand the connection between childhood trauma and substance abuse. Like many victims of childhood trauma, the couple turned to drugs as a way to cope with the past and struggled to overcome their addiction. But with the birth of their son Andy, the couple knew they needed to change. But change doesn’t always come easy.
Just a few short months after Andy’s birth, the struggling family faced a setback when they were unable to afford their home and found themselves in need of shelter. Bill and Amy knew they needed help and that’s when they found the emergency shelter program at Contact Ministries and Helping Hands of Springfield.
The Emergency Shelter for Men, Women, and Women with Children program is a collaborative program started by the two agencies to not only support those experiencing homelessness, but also to help keep families from being split up when in need of emergency shelter. This program is the only shelter program of its kind in our community.
Bill and Amy’s caseworker placed Bill at Helping Hands, and Amy and Andy at Contact Ministries across the street. The entire family received the food, safety, and security they needed while coordinating family time so that Bill could continue bonding with Amy and their son.
Shelter staff also connected the family to other programs, including addiction recovery programs, and helped the family find stability. Within a short period, both Bill and Amy found stable employment, were maintaining sobriety, and were accepted as a family into a local transitional living program.
Today, the family is continuing to thrive and best of all… they are doing it together.
The collaborative emergency shelter program between Contact Ministries and Helping Hands of Springfield is unique. Despite nearly 36% of all homeless being families, few communities have shelter programs which serve families. This often leads to families being split apart which can make it even harder on these families as they work to overcome obstacles by themselves.
