John’s Story of Hope

Hi, I’m John. Last year, I found myself unemployed after being unable to work because of an injury. Like many people living paycheck-to-paycheck, it wasn’t long before the bills piled up and I was at risk of losing my home. That’s when I found the Financial Independence through Training (F.I.T.) program at UCP Land of Lincoln.

The F.I.T. program provides work-skills support, vocational training, and financial education to help people who are disabled, homeless, abused, or who have lower incomes find long-term employment.

Through F.I.T., my case manager helped me find a temporary position at BUNN; and just a few months later I was offered a full-time position with the company. While I’m grateful for the work skills support F.I.T. provided, the greatest benefit the program provided me was the skills they helped me develop to better manage my home financially. UCP worked with me to create a monthly budget, manage my bills and stay on track with my long term goals.

Because of UCP’s help, I’ve found a job I love and will soon have enough money saved to purchase my first car.
