Volunteer at Home during our first Week of Action!
Day of Action is the chance to show everyone in our community that even though we are apart, we are United. With COVID-19 still ongoing and ever changing, in-person/traditional Day of Action projects planned were cancelled. Despite these changes, United Way is excited to reveal Week of Action and to work with you in a new way! Join in by finding a volunteer activity that’s right for you!

Sunday June 14, 2020- United Way Baby Shower

What items to donate?
- Diapers all sizes/brands and partial packs are great too! The greatest need is for diapers sized 4 and 5.
- Baby Formula – all brands
- Baby Wipes – all brands
- Kid snacks – all brands, Goldfish crackers, pretzel sticks, Teddy Grahams, etc.
Donations can be dropped off from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 14th at the United Way office (1999 Wabash, Suite 107, Springfield IL, across the parking lot from Dublin Pub). Just swing on by, drop your supplies off, and you’ll be greeted by United Way employees who will accept your donation and maintain social distancing.
Supplies will be taken to the Parent Place for distribution and directly to Mini O’Beirne Crisis Nursery & Contact Ministries on the 15th.
Monday June 15, 2020- Write Letters to Seniors
Write a note to a local senior to brighten their day!
- We ask that all letters are legible (large print) and are handwritten.
- Please avoid religious or political statements in your letters.
- Your letter should resonate with anyone.
- Do embrace your creativity! Recipients love when the letters are personal.
- We encourage you to make your letters detailed, thoughtful and heartfelt.
- No worries if you’re not artistic – make the card you’d like to receive. If you have a child in the family, include a picture or coloring page they have done.
- Above all, be kind and thoughtful. This is a one-way letter exchange, meaning you will not receive a letter back, so do your best to keep messages short and positive.
Send your letter to the United Way office to be distributed to Concordia Village residents and Senior Services Daily Bread recipients. Please address your envelope:
Senior Letters for United Way
1999 Wabash Ave. Suite 107
Springfield, IL 62704
You can also drop your letter off at the United Way office during normal business hours of Monday-Thursday 8:30-5:00 p.m.
Want to do even more? When you drop off your letter, feel free to also add small care packages for seniors. These could include coloring pages, word searches, crossword puzzles, flowers, snacks, etc. Be as creative as you would like! These seniors greatly appreciate receiving things from thoughtful volunteers.
Tuesday June 16, 2020- Mock Interviews and Resume Review with Express Employment Professionals and Lincoln Land Community College
In partnership with Express Employment Professionals and Lincoln Land Community College, individuals seeking resume review and mock interviews can sign up to receive advice from volunteers and professional experts.
Other individuals can sign up to assist job seekers in need through providing advice on resumes and performing a mock interview. Volunteers will ask real interview questions and provide feedback for improvement and will also review resumes and cover letters. Volunteers can also provide guidance on how to dress for an in-person or online interview as well as other tips for success. United Way, in partnership with District 186, will run background checks on the volunteers to protect participants.
Wednesday June 17, 2020- Make Masks for local agencies
United Way partnered with Third Presbyterian Church to create ready to sew packs that volunteers can pick up starting Tuesday June 16th. Each mask will take approximately 15 mins to complete. You will need to have access to a sewing machine in order to participate in this project. Once the mask is made, you will need to run them through the washer and dryer for sanitation of the mask. After you make your masks, return them and leftover materials to Third Presbyterian Church by Saturday June 20th.
Check out Third Presbyterian Church’s how-to video to help with creating the masks.
Thursday June 18, 2020- Thank You Thursday
There are so many people who are on the frontlines of the COVID-19 outbreak. They continue to help keep our community safe and the world running. To honor and celebrate their ongoing sacrifice, let’s say thank you!
Say thank you to delivery drivers working during COVID-19 with a care package! Create a basket for your front porch that includes items like bottled water, sports drinks, chips, granola bars, or other treats that can be enjoyed on the go.
Print the poster we have created and include it on or by your basket. You can receive the downloadable poster when you sign up for this project.
Another way to say thank you, is helping the Red Cross write Thank You notes. You can pick up these cards at the United Way office all week long! Return the completed cards by Monday, June 22nd.
There are many ways to say thank you. We have created a list of other ways to say thank you along with the options above. Choose one – or more – so frontline workers can know how much our community appreciates them! Click here to view eight other ways to say thank you.
